This Japanese snack is made of wheat flour in the shape of a ball with octopus inside is rather one of the famous Japanese food all over the world! Takoyaki is actually very filling since flour is used as a main ingredient just like pancakes and bread.



Flour binds everything together into a very loose batter.

Takoyaki tastes a little bit like round shaped , but it has a much different flavor from the Tako octopus cooked inside them.



Cast iron are heavier than aluminum ones and will take longer to get hot, but they retain heat better.

A small ladle that holds about half an ounce is perfect for scooping and pouring thin batters, such as the traditional takoyaki batter, into the pan.







Depending on the size of the semi-sphere mould and the amount of batter you overflow around the mould, the number of balls you can make can change.

You need the half-sphere shapes to really make that round ball shape.
Now typically filled with octopus meat, takoyaki's predecessor was filled with beef!
You need to use a long skewer or a pointy chopstick to avoid your hand getting too hot.

    Tip 3: Flip 90 degrees and stuff in the extra batter. Break the extra batter around the hole with skewers. Once the bottom of the takoyaki balls is crispy, rotate 90 degrees to let the uncooked batter pour out into the hole. Stuff and push in the extra surrounding dough inside the balls.

    Put a piece of octopus in each mould, then tenkasu, shallots/scallion and benishōga on top of octopus. Leave some tenkasu, shallots/scallion and benishōga for the second batch (1/3 in my case as my pan makes 16 balls at once). Pour the batter over the mould and fill the entire surface of the pan/griller.
