Bersih was first launched in November 2006 as a political party-driven movement with members consisting of opposition political leaders and representatives from the civil society.

We can protest against the government to clarify that this country is not theirs, that Malaysians aren´t their slaves and that people aren´t stupid.

There were a series of exposes by online investigative blogs, namely Sarawak Report and major news portal Wall Street Journal that money was being siphoned off from the fund into personal accounts of Najib and his close relations.
