Doms - Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness and Recovery

Have a question or comment? Using a meta-analysis based on four eligible studies, it seems cryotherapy does not reduce DOMS or improve recovery.

I recently discussed this concept with a member of my lab.

Most of the symptoms of the DOMS are a result of the inflammatory response, not the actual muscle damage itself.

There is also insufficient evidence to determine whether whole-body — compared with passive rest or no whole-body cryotherapy — reduces DOMS, or improves subjective recovery, after exercise.

Remember, DOMS is related to muscle fiber damage, and if you lift heavy before you've warmed up properly, you'll likely inflict more of it—and perhaps injure yourself in the process.

Any discomfort should start to ease within 3 days post-exercise and you should return to normal within a week. If your symptoms persist longer than a week then seek professional medical advice.
