It´s no problem that it wasn´t meant to be a real book, but just a serial novel Kings´ ingenuity makes it seem as if it´s one piece, never intentioned to be published part by part, and one bonus of this writing method is that there are even more cliffhangers than in an average novel, because there had to be a bigger hook at each end.
