Located 7km from Mukah town, the new Mukah airport began its construction in August 2017 to replace the nearby STOLport, or an airport with a short runway, which in this case, was 1,097m long. The STOLport constrained the types of aircraft that could use the facility and could only serve smaller propeller-driven aircraft, other than restricting the amount of fuel that can be carried by the planes.
Meanwhile, Dr Wee said the completion of the Mukah Airport was a milestone in Sarawak as its construction took place during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. He also said as travel was restricted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many proposals for airport construction and renovation had to be reconsidered.
It has a 1,500 metre-long and 30 metre-wide runway while the terminal building covers an area of 3,500 sq metres. The airport terminal is capable of handling 204 passengers during peak hours compared to 40 passengers at the old STOLport, which could only accommodate small aircraft such as Twin Otters. The Mukah Short landing and take-off airport (STOLport), which has existed for over 50 years, held its last operations on June 16 with the last flight departing for Miri at 1.20pm.
